Erfurt imposed a culture promotion tax on 1 January 2011. Travelling for business reason is exempt.


  • Five percent of the gross cost of accommodation:
    • Excludes breakfast
    • Excludes other services
  • Day rooms and no-show bookings are subject to the tax
  • Erfurt’s municipal tax and revenue office is allowed to check the details submitted by the hotel guest

Get exemtped as follows…

      • Completed certification: –> download here or
      • Provision (copy) of employer certification/trade fair passes/business travel documentation etc. to the accommodation provider or
      • Booking via “corporate portals”, which automatically confirm that the trip is required for business reasons or
      • payment of invoice by the employer or
      • A completed form and list of all group members are sufficient for group bookings

The certification is always valid for one stay; if you depart on a Friday and return on a Monday, then a new certification has to be submitted.

Your city tax exemption on business trips

City tax exemption is quite simple: the taxes are only due for privately arranged trips. As soon as you are traveling for business reasons, the hotel can refrain from calculating and forwarding the city tax to the municipality.

BUT: The hotels are instructed by the cities to take the tax from the room bill only if it is clearly proven that the stay is for business reasons.
